Live, Single-Cell to Whole Organism Imaging
Atto Bioscience is a world leader in real-time, kinetic, confocal fluorescence microscopy. Since its inception in 1985, Atto has developed technologies and expertise in rapid kinetic imaging of cellular events, in particular second messengers such as cAMP and calcium. Atto was first to commercialize a live-cell, cAMP FRET-based assay (cAMP Fluorosensor™), and develop fast kinetic capabilities for multiple ratiometric dyes. The knowledge, depth and experience to effectively integrate dyes and other fluorescent molecules, imaging setup and conditions, temporal and spatial parameters, and cell biology has further been extended into analysis of live and fixed multi-cellular systems from stem cells, to tissue to live whole organisms such as C. elegans and zebra fish.

Software
The software group at Atto provides a full spectrum of capabilities that span instrumentation control to data analysis. Software development at Atto has produced commercial applications for imaging systems and automation control in the fields of basic biological and pharmaceutical research.

Examples include software design and development for:
  • Imaging and Image Analysis
  • Device Control and Automation
  • Device Firmware Programming
  • Database Design and Integration
  • Distributed System Architecture
  • Network Programming
  • Pattern Recognition and Statistical Analysis

Engineering and Manufacturing
Atto's engineering and manufacturing departments have been developing and manufacturing advanced imaging systems for nearly two decades. For this, Atto maintains a fully equipped on-site manufacturing facility in addition to substantial experience and depth in all aspects of imaging.

Atto believes the unique interplay between engineering, manufacturing, software, cell biology and assay development is essential to the development of imaging platforms that meet the real needs of the research community, and provide successfully integrated hardware, software and assay solutions. These facilities further provide the potential for rapid prototype and design modifications and customizations.

The on-site capabilities include:

Engineering:
  • Mechanical
  • Electrical
  • Optical
Manufacturing:
  • Complete CNC machine shop
  • Electro-Mechanical assembly
  • Optical assembly and alignment
  • Documentation
  • Quality Control

Atto has state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities allowing rapid prototyping and development of unique imaging technology.

Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Assay Development
The biology group at Atto is comprised of over 70% Ph.D.'s with extensive depth in areas ranging from cloning and protein expression, cell culture, assay development, and drug screening. Atto has developed novel, world-class cell engineering capabilities, and maintains extensive collections of cloned receptors, G-proteins, and signal transduction proteins which it successfully applies to the development of generally useful assays such as Act:One, custom assays, basic research and target identification/validation. The group has substantial experience in second messenger detection, and in cultivation and manipulation of a breadth of cell lines, primary cells and stem cells. Expertise in-house has enabled small-scale drug screening efforts, both for assay validation and candidate compound identification. Collectively these abilities effectively provide technical support for imaging platforms and assay development as well as a diversity of custom research programs with pharma and biotech companies.
