Symply and ATTO Technology Unveil SymplyPRO Ethernet LTO Appliances: A Game-Changer in Tape Archiving

Sep 15, 2023

In a landmark partnership, ATTO Technology, Inc., a global leader in network and storage connectivity, celebrates its 35th anniversary this year by teaming up with Symply, a trailblazing developer of storage solutions. Together, they introduce a ground-breaking product set to revolutionize tape archiving workflows.

SymplyPRO Ethernet LTO appliances will be showcased at IBC 2023, Stand 7.C21 in Amsterdam. This remarkable innovation integrates ATTO's cutting-edge XstreamCORE® 8100T Intelligent Bridge technology, endowing SAS tape drives with Ethernet capabilities and embedding LTO tape drives.

“It’s an all-in-one, Ethernet-enabled LTO tape archive that is affordable but doesn’t compromise on performance or features,” said Tim Klein, president and CEO, ATTO Technology. “This is exactly the kind of final product we envisioned when we were developing the 8100T and Symply knocked it out of the park!”

Keith Warburton, CEO of Symply, adds, "Our partnership with ATTO Technology has been a journey of innovation and collaboration. SymplyPRO Ethernet LTO appliances represent a significant leap forward for tape archiving, offering unrivaled flexibility and performance. We're proud to bring this game-changing solution to the industry."

Symply's showcase highlights the SymplyPRO Ethernet LTO appliances' versatility. They are connected to an Apple Mac® via Ethernet, utilizing ATTO Xtend SAN™ iSCSI Initiator to enable iSCSI on macOS®, and a Windows 11 PC using the built-in Windows iSCSI Initiator. This demonstration underscores the flexibility of the appliance, making it an asset for a wide range of users.

SymplyPRO Ethernet LTO appliances are available in various configurations, including half-height LTO drives in single and dual-drive desktops, 1RU, and 2RU rackmount configurations featuring full-height LTO drives. These appliances offer native performance up to 400MB/sec per drive, and dual 10Gb Ethernet SFP+ interfaces provide flexibility in network connectivity. The appliance can support either an additional two LTO drives via a SymplyPRO SAS LTO, making a total of four LTOs, or it can be connected to an LTO tape library with one or two LTO drives, offering maximum flexibility.

The XstreamCORE 8100T Intelligent Bridge is a cost-effective yet powerful bridging solution, connecting up to four 12Gb SAS tape drives to two 10GbE ports. It presents the SAS drives as iSCSI targets on a shared network, ensuring high-performance data transfers with extremely low latency. This embeddable solution empowers storage device manufacturers to create cost-effective Ethernet tape archive devices effortlessly.

ATTO and Symply share a long and fruitful partnership. ATTO's technology and support have played a pivotal role in the success of the SymplyFIRST product line and the SymplyPRO line of backup and archive products. Additionally, Symply has certified the ATTO FastFrame Ethernet Adapters and Ethernet Thunderlink products for use with their Transporter S3 edge appliance and Workspace XE desktop collaborative storage solution.
