Partner Spotlight: Dell EMC Isilon

Network-attached storage, or “NAS” as it is commonly referred to, has been a staple in server architectures since the 1990’s. The single file server model of the early days has evolved into clustered NAS solutions with the primary benefit being the ability to scale-out, adding storage nodes as necessary without otherwise altering the base environment.

The leading scale-out platform today is Dell EMC Isilon™. The intelligence behind Isilon scale-out NAS storage is Dell EMC Isilon OneFS™, a customized operating system. A single Isilon OneFS volume eliminates the need for costly silos of proprietary, application-specific storage at each stage of the workflow. Clients use open protocols such as SMB, NFS, iSCSI, FTP, and HTTP to access a OneFS volume, eliminating the need for costly per-client file-system licenses.

ATTO Technology and Dell EMC have worked closely together on Isilon solutions since Isilon joined the Dell EMC family in 2010. ATTO FastFrame™ Ethernet adapters are ideal complements to any workflow that features Isilon scale-out NAS solutions. FastFrame makes it possible for Windows®, macOS®, and Linux® clients to achieve the highest performance and lowest latency with standard file-sharing protocols over existing Gigabit, 10GbE and 40GbE networks.

In addition to FastFrame NICs, ATTO ThunderLink® Thunderbolt™ adapters provide additional connectivity between Isilon NAS appliances and Thunderbolt enabled devices like Dell Precision™ mobile workstations or Mac Pro® desktop or MacBook Pro® mobile workstations.

These ATTO and Dell EMC Isilon components combine to create high-performance environments for media and entertainment, manufacturing and design, oil and gas, game development, imaging or healthcare. Indeed, any workflow that requires workstations outfitted with powerful graphics, processors and memory where the assets are shared from a central pool would benefit from the high-bandwidth and low latency provided by ATTO and Dell EMC Isilon.

Broadcasters, motion picture studios, and media professionals worldwide trust Dell EMC Isilon to provide the storage foundation for their media workflows. Among the many reasons for this is that Dell EMC and ATTO provide flexible tools based on open protocols. A workflow based on open network file-sharing protocols and the effortless scalability of Isilon OneFS allows media and entertainment professionals to rapidly adapt to changing production requirements, ever-increasing content storage requirements, and increasingly complicated workflows.

ATTO has worked with Dell EMC Isilon to tune these systems, revolutionizing real-time collaborative video production. The Dell EMC Isilon/ATTO solution easily adapts to the needs of its users, reliably supporting tight production schedules.

The relationship between ATTO Technology and Dell EMC extends far beyond the Isilon scale-out NAS storage platform. ATTO connects other Dell EMC storage solutions using ATTO Celerity™ Fibre Channel HBAs, Dell PowerEdge™ servers via ATTO FastFrame and ATTO ThunderLink, and Dell MS Exchange Server solutions and Dell PowerVault™ SAN storage using ATTO ExpressSAS® HBAs.
