Partner Spotlight – Spectra Logic

Spectra Logic develops data storage and data management solutions that address the challenge of digital preservation in the face of exponential data growth. This year they are celebrating 40 years of dedication to storage innovation and the global adoption of Spectra Logic solutions by industry leaders across multiple markets.

Chairman and CEO Nathan Thompson founded Spectra Logic as Western Automation in 1979 at the age of 19, running the company out of his apartment while an engineering student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The company’s name changed to Spectra Logic in 1993, however, the company’s headquarters have remained in Boulder.

Spectra Logic launched their first tape library in 1995, and have since become a prominent brand in that segment. They were the first company to implement iSCSI in a tape library product and were first to release a tape library with integrated hardware-based data encryption. Today Spectra Logic tape solutions can be found in nearly every market, from small to medium-sized companies to large Fortune 50 corporations and government entities. Indeed, more than 20,000 companies worldwide have implemented Spectra Logic solutions to address tiered storage needs.

Since both ATTO Technology and Spectra Logic specialize in technologies that lead to the protection and preservation of data, it’s no surprise they established a relationship collaborating on solutions. From working together to certify ATTO HBAs compatible with Spectra Logic solutions, like the ATTO ExpressSAS® ESAS-H608, to the inclusion of ATTO XstreamCORE® ET 8200 in the cutting edge Spectra® Swarm solution, each company’s technology compliments the other’s.

Spectra Swarm adds Ethernet connectivity to Spectra LTO tape libraries, extending tape libraries beyond single server racks by utilizing a backbone 40GbE RoCE or iSCSI connection that is locally switched to multiple SAS-connected LTO drives. This solution with ATTO XstreamCORE ET 8200 allows organizations to utilize their iSCSI infrastructure for maximum flexibility while providing optimized tape library performance and enables cost savings due to the ability to use lower-cost SAS half-height tape drives.

ATTO and Spectra Logic continue to collaborate on storage solutions. We’re looking forward to providing together new solutions that enable affordable, multi-decade data storage and access for enterprise environments and workflows including archive, backup, cold storage, private and public cloud.
