Partner Spotlight – Western Digital

Western Digital® has helped to drive the innovation needed to capture, preserve, access and transform an ever-increasing diversity of data. From advanced data centers to mobile sensors to personal devices and virtually anywhere data lives, Western Digital creates environments in which data thrives.

Western Digital has been a major figure in the computing industry since founded in 1970.  In their early years, they were the world’s leading supplier of processors used in calculators.  As the 1980s dawned, Western Digital transitioned to hard disk controller chips, eventually becoming prominent in the architectures of early PCs.  Western Digital used their expertise in storage controllers in the 1990s to embed that technology into discreet hard disk drives (HDDs), helping to define what has become the standard technologies built into storage drives.

Today, Western Digital is one of the largest storage manufacturers with several distinct units focused on HDDs and solid-state drives (SSDs), a variety of storage platforms, cloud systems, and flash storage solutions for embedded and removable applications.  Their innovation has led to the Western Digital DC HC500 series, which features the industry’s only fifth-generation helium platform for high-capacity hard drives.

ATTO has a strong partnership with Western Digital.  This past year ATTO ExpressSAS® SAS/SATA HBAsand ATTO ThunderLink® Thunderbolt™ to SAS/SATA adapters were certified for use with Western Digital DC HC530 14TB helium hard drives.  For over a decade, ATTO has earned certifications for many Western Digital HDDs and SSDs and we are continuously testing and adding to the certification list.

As an example of the partnership between ATTO and Western Digital, they collaborated on a unique storage solution that preserves security footage originating from up to 32 cameras.  ATTO ExpressSAS HBAs with WriteStopensures no frame will be compromised and ATTO FastFrame™ network interface cards (NICs)provide connectivity to Ethernet networks while using up to 30% less energy.  These connect to Western Digital Purple surveillance-class drives which are designed for 24/7 high-definition surveillance environments.

The partnership continues to grow.  ATTO hardware has been showcased by Western Digital at several trade shows this year, most recently at NAB Show 2019 in Las Vegas.  We continue to work together on ways to provide certified, high-performance yet flexible storage solutions for all types of data-hungry computing environments from content creation to enterprise IT, to big data and virtual architectures.
