Symply Partners with ATTO Technology to Create Breakthrough Ethernet Tape Archive Appliance

Featuring ATTO intelligent bridge technology for a portable, high-performance, cost-effective tape archive device discoverable over Ethernet, ATTO Technology, Inc., a global leader in network and storage connectivity celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, announced its partnership with Symply, an innovative developer of disk, tape, and cloud storage, has led to a breakthrough product that will revolutionize tape archiving workflows.

“It’s an all-in-one, Ethernet-enabled LTO tape archive that is affordable but doesn’t compromise on performance or features,” said Tim Klein, president and CEO, ATTO Technology. “This is exactly the kind of final product we envisioned when we were developing the 8100T and Symply knocked it out of the park!”

Symply is showcasing its groundbreaking Ethernet-connected LTO tape appliance at IBC 2023 in Amsterdam. The self-contained appliance is rooted in an embeddable ATTO XstreamCORE® 8100T Intelligent Bridge, which provides Ethernet capability to SAS tape drives, and a built-in IBM LTO tape drive.

The rest of the showcase consists of Symply’s product connected to an Apple Mac® via Ethernet where ATTO Xtend SAN™ iSCSI Initiator enables iSCSI on macOS®. YoYotta LTFS and/or Hedge Canister backup software runs the backup.

This is a companion to Symply’s SAS and Thunderbolt™ tape archives but differentiates itself by making LTO tape archives discoverable on any Ethernet network. Designed with a small footprint for portability, it allows for archiving data within local networks where direct SAS or Thunderbolt connectivity isn’t available or feasible.

XstreamCORE 8100T Intelligent Bridges are cost-effective, yet powerful bridging devices that can connect up to four 12Gb SAS tape drives to two 10GbE ports. It presents the SAS drives as iSCSI targets on a shared network. High-performance data transfers are handled by hardware to provide extremely low latency. The embeddable 8100T presents storage device manufacturers with a ready-made, easy-to-implement solution for creating cost-effective Ethernet tape archive devices. It allows OEMs to build Ethernet tape archive solutions to their specifications, using components they select.

ATTO and Symply have a longstanding, rewarding partnership, where most recently ATTO provided technology and support as the SymplyFIRST line was being created. ATTO SAS technology can be found in the SymplyLTO line of backup and archive products. SymplyADDR Thunderbolt expansion products are fully approved by ATTO Technology for use with their entire line of PCIe storage adapters.
